Population screening programmes
To help prevent some of the most common cancers, the Flemish government organises and funds large-scale population screening programmes. Every year, 1.5 million people in Flanders receive an invitation for a preventive screening. Many cancers can be prevented if detected early. So don’t delay your screening and make sure to take part.
Population screening for cancer
Population screening for colorectal cancer
Men and women aged 50 to 74 receive a home test kit every two years to collect a stool sample. A laboratory checks whether the sample contains traces of blood.
Good to know
Helan reimburses consultations and preventive examinations related to the prevention or detection of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, allergies, osteoporosis, respiratory conditions and diabetes.
Population screening for congenital conditions
Between 72 and 96 hours after birth, a blood sample is taken from the back of a baby’s hand. This sample is used to screen for 18 rare congenital conditions. Although these conditions are uncommon, they often have serious consequences. The population screening for congenital conditions makes it possible to start treatment at a very early stage if needed.
Received an invitation?
Government-organised population screening programmes play an important role in detecting cancer early. The sooner certain types of cancer are identified, the higher the chances of successful treatment.
According to the Foundation Against Cancer, around 1 in 3 cancer cases can be prevented through a healthy lifestyle. Staying active, eating a balanced diet and protecting yourself in the sun can all help reduce your risk of developing cancer.
