The statutory health insurance and additional benefits
The statutory health insurance requires everyone in Belgium to be affiliated with a mutual insurance fund or health insurance fund. Through the statutory health insurance, Helan arranges reimbursements for, among other things, doctor visits, hospital admissions, pharmacy costs, and provides an allowance if you are incapacitated for work due to certain circumstances. All health insurance funds reimburse the same amounts (as determined by the NIHDI).
Everyone affiliated with a health insurance fund must also pay a health insurance contribution. Thanks to this contribution, you are entitled to additional benefits specific to Helan.
Reimbursement of a doctor's note and eAttest
Most general practitioners and dentists (as of September 2025) use the eAttest to arrange reimbursement directly with your health insurance fund. Other healthcare providers, such as your physiotherapist or specialist doctor, often still provide a paper certificate.
Reimbursement Helan advantage
Requesting a reimbursement for your sports club, wellness, or preventive items? You can do so via the Helan advantages. Read all about it here.

Reimbursement with a medical agreement
For certain replacement incomes or reimbursements, you need a medical agreement. The advisory physician of the health insurance fund then checks whether you meet all legal conditions and decides whether you are entitled to increased reimbursements.
Reimbursement policy
To keep the cost of treatment under control, there are reimbursement policies. This allows you to qualify for higher reimbursements and benefit from cost-saving measures.
Reimbursement for dental care, hospitalisation or serious illness
Additional insurance protects you against high costs for, among other things, dental care, hospital admissions or serious illnesses. Read here which reimbursements you can expect and how to apply for them.

No longer entitled to reimbursements
In some cases, you may lose your entitlement to reimbursements. In everyday language, this is also referred to as not being "in order”.
- If you do not pay your health insurance contribution on time or fail to do so for an extended period, you lose the right to payments from our supplementary benefits.
- If you do not pay social security contributions, or pay insufficient amounts, you lose the right to payments from the statutory health insurance.
