Exercise coach with Exercise On Referral
Would you like to get more exercise but don’t know how? Ask your general practitioner or healthcare provider about Exercise On Referral. A coach in your local area will work with you to draw up an exercise plan and help keep you motivated.
Statutory reimbursement
The Flemish government reimburses the costs. You only pay a limited maximum personal contribution.
Ask your healthcare provider for a referral.
A healthcare provider can be your doctor, but also a nurse, podiatrist, occupational therapist, psychologist, pharmacist, dietitian, social worker, physiotherapist, or midwife. They can refer you to such a professional coach with a referral letter. You then call the coach yourself to make an appointment. During the first meeting, the coach and you will create a personalised exercise plan.
The points system applies.
Exercise on Referral works with a points system. Over a period of 2 calendar years, you receive 84 points that you can use to see an Exercise on Referral coach.
You choose yourself how to use these points:
- for individual guidance: 3 points per 15 minutes = 12 points per hour
- for group guidance: 1 point per 15 minutes = 4 points per hour

Always bring an adhesive stamp with you.
Always bring a recent health insurance adhesive stamp with you and show it to your coach.
Your points will be deducted from your total points balance.
For one hour of individual guidance, 12 points are deducted. For one hour of group guidance, 4 points are deducted.
- You live in Flanders or Brussels.
- You must provide a referral letter from a healthcare provider to the Exercise On Referral coach.
Helan-benefit: 25 euros reimbursed
Helan Health Insurance Fund reimburses you 25 euros per year for Exercise on Referral when the statutory health insurance does not intervene.
You will receive a payment receipt from the coach.
You need this proof of payment to request reimbursement.
Send the payment receipt to Helan.
Send the proof of payment by post to Helan Health Insurance Fund, Boomsesteenweg 5, 2610 Wilrijk, with a white sticker attached. Or drop it in a Helan mailbox in your area.
We will transfer the amount to your bank account.
- You are up to date with your health insurance contributions.
- You have a referral letter from a healthcare provider.
- You are not eligible for statutory reimbursement, or your points for it have already been used.
- You cannot benefit from this advantage if you have already used the preventive sports examinations benefit.

A program with a BOV coach (= Exercise on Referral coach) lasts 6 months. First, there is an introductory meeting, followed by several follow-up contacts to monitor the exercise plan. At the end, there is a closing meeting to evaluate the programme together. The coach then discusses with you how you can continue this new active lifestyle independently.
The Exercise on Referral benefit cannot be combined:
- With the preventive sports examinations benefit
- With the statutory reimbursement for Exercise on Referral
Have you used up your points? Then you can still see your coach, but you will pay the full rate:
- For individual guidance by a professional exercise coach, you pay a personal contribution of a maximum of 20 euros per hour. If you are entitled to increased reimbursement, you pay a maximum of 1 euro per 15 minutes (4 euros per hour).
- For group guidance, you pay a personal contribution of a maximum of 4 euros per hour. Those entitled to increased reimbursement pay a maximum of 2 euros per hour.
