Reimbursements for dental care and orthodontics
Do you want to request a reimbursement for dental care costs? Below you can find out how to get reimbursement from the statutory health insurance and the Helan benefit for orthodontics for children.
Reimbursement statutory health insurance
The statutory health insurance reimburses many dental care costs. Preventive dental care, for example, is largely reimbursed, especially when you go for an annual dental check-up. For children up to 18 years old, preventive dental care is even completely free.
Please note: Dental corrections can be expensive and are only partially reimbursed by the statutory health insurance. We recommend taking out supplementary dental insurance. This way, you are protected against high dental costs if you, for example, need an implant or crown.
Request a reimbursement
The settlement of your dental costs can, in principle, still be done in 2 ways since 1 September 2025: via an eAttest (electronic medical certificate) or a third-party payer scheme. The paper medical certificate (certificate of provided care) is being phased out. However, exceptions may apply for dentists older than 63 years or in cases of force majeure.
Read below how you will be reimbursed in these cases.
You pay the full legally determined cost for dental care to your dentist. If you consult a non-contracted doctor, an additional supplement may apply.
- Your reimbursement request is sent directly to Helan.
- You will receive proof of the eAttest, but you do not need to send it to Helan.
- You will receive the reimbursement automatically within 3 working days.
Please note: For certain dental care costs, you can apply for additional reimbursements, for example through the Dentalia Up (or Plus) dental insurance or the Helan orthodontic benefit. In these cases, you still need to submit a reimbursement request to Helan yourself. Do not forget this.
If your dentist applies the third-party payer scheme, you only pay the co-payment.
If you consult a non-contracted doctor, an additional supplement may apply.
Please note: For certain dental care costs, you can apply for extra reimbursements, for example through the Dentalia Up (or Plus) dental insurance or the Helan orthodontic benefit. In these cases, you still need to submit a reimbursement request to Helan yourself. Do not forget this.
More info about the third-party payer scheme.
Since 1 September 2025, dentists are required to switch to the eAttest or the third-party payer scheme. After a dental visit, you will therefore no longer receive a medical certificate (certificate of provided care). From now on, your dentist will handle everything directly with Helan.
Exceptions may apply for dentists older than 63 years or in cases of force majeure. Do you still receive a medical certificate in that case?
- You pay the full legally determined fee for dental care to your dentist or specialist. If you consult a non-contracted doctor, an additional supplement may apply.
- You will receive a medical certificate with which you can request reimbursement.
- Helan is legally only allowed to process medical certificates upon receipt of the original document. You can submit it via the mailbox of your local health insurance office or a Helan mailbox. Alternatively, you can send the medical certificate by post to Helan Independent Health Insurance, Boomsesteenweg 5, 2610 Wilrijk.
Reimbursement Helan-benefit orthodontics
Customers of Helan Health Insurance receive up to 1,050 euros reimbursed per person for orthodontics, covering 60% of all co-payments, supplements and materials up to the age of 22. View the conditions of the Helan orthodontic benefit for children and young people.
Request Helan-benefit
Ask your orthodontist for a proof document for reimbursement of the Helan orthodontic benefit.
This is a form provided by the RIZIV to your dentist. If your doctor does not have this form, print this application form and have it completed by your orthodontist.
Submit the completed form via My Helan Web, the My Helan App or a Helan mailbox.
If a paper medical certificate (certificate of provided care) has been issued, we are legally only allowed to process the original document.
Submit it to us together with the application form via your local health insurance office or a Helan mailbox.
You can also send your certificate and application form by post to: Helan Health Insurance, Boomsesteenweg 5, 2610 Wilrijk.
In that case, you do not need to complete any additional form for your dental insurance.
Example 1: you are affiliated with Dentalia Plus and are also entitled to the Helan orthodontic benefit. In this case, submitting one application form is sufficient to receive all reimbursements.
Example 2: you are affiliated with Dentalia Up and are also entitled to the Helan orthodontic benefit. In this case, submitting one application form is sufficient to receive all reimbursements.
