Are you losing your hair due to burns, chemotherapy or radiotherapy? You can expect a partial reimbursement for the purchase of your wig.
Statutory reimbursement for wigs
The statutory health insurance provides reimbursement for wigs for both men and women. The reimbursement never exceeds the invoiced amount. In cases of baldness due to antimitotic chemotherapy or radiotherapy, alopecia areata, or cicatricial alopecia of physical-chemical, traumatic, or inflammatory origin, the reimbursement amounts to a maximum of 180 euros. In cases of cicatricial alopecia of radiotherapeutic origin, you are reimbursed a maximum of 270 euros every 2 years.
Send us the prescription and the invoice for the wig.
Submit the invoice for the wig, together with the medical prescription issued by:
- your treating physician (in case of baldness due to radiotherapy or chemotherapy)
- or a dermatologist (in case of baldness of more than 30% due to skin conditions such as alopecia areata or cicatricial alopecia)
Send everything by post to Helan Independent Health Insurance, Boomsesteenweg 5 in 2610 Wilrijk, with a white patient sticker. Or drop it in a Helan mailbox near you.
We will transfer the reimbursement to your account.
- You must meet one of the following conditions:
- complete baldness due to radio- and/or antimitotic chemotherapy
- baldness of more than 30% due to the skin condition alopecia areata
- baldness of more than 30% due to cicatricial alopecia of physical/chemical, traumatic or inflammatory origin
- cicatricial alopecia of radiotherapeutic origin
- Who supplies the wig does not affect the granting of the reimbursement.
- In the case of baldness due to chemotherapy or radiotherapy, you are entitled to a new reimbursement for a wig after two years, provided that a new antimitotic chemotherapy or radiotherapy has started resulting in complete baldness.
- This benefit only applies if the wig is purchased in Belgium.
Helan-benefit: 180 or 270 euros reimbursed
Are you not eligible for statutory reimbursement? In that case, Helan Health Insurance reimburses a maximum of 180 euros in the event of baldness resulting from antimitotic chemo- or radiotherapy. In cases of cicatricial alopecia of radiotherapeutic origin, you will receive reimbursement of a maximum of 270 euros every 2 years per year.
Send the prescription and the purchase receipt to Helan.
Please provide us with your doctor’s prescription for a wig, together with the original purchase invoice:
- Digital: via the My Helan app (mobile) or via My Helan (desktop). No adhesive stamp is required; we identify your document through your login.
- By post to Helan Independent Health Insurance, Boomsesteenweg 5 in 2610 Wilrijk, with a white adhesive stamp. Or drop it in a Helan mailbox near you.
We will transfer the amount to your bank account.
- You are in order with your health insurance contributions.
- The reimbursement only applies if no compensation is possible through the statutory health insurance.
- Only with a medical prescription, stating the cause of the baldness.
Statutory reimbursement for headwear
The statutory health insurance has provided, since 1/7/2024, a reimbursement of a maximum of 120 euros per year for head coverings.
Send us the prescription and the invoice
Please send us the invoice, together with the medical prescription, issued by:
- your treating physician (in case of baldness due to radio- or chemotherapy)
- or a dermatologist (in case of hair loss of more than thirty percent due to the skin conditions alopecia areata or cicatricial alopecia)

We will transfer the reimbursement to your account.
- You must meet one of these conditions:
- complete baldness due to radio- and/or antimitotic chemotherapy
- hair loss of more than 30 percent due to the skin disease alopecia areata
- hair loss of more than 30 percent due to cicatricial alopecia of physical/chemical, traumatic or inflammatory origin
- cicatricial alopecia of radiotherapeutic origin
- Only for scarves, hats, beanies, caps, berets, and other types of accessories that are not necessarily textile-based but are intended for everyday use.
- Not applicable to helmets and costume items.
- Maximum of 3 accessories per year.
- Not cumulative with reimbursement for wigs/hair prostheses.
