What is cancer?

Cancer is a collective term for a group of diseases. They have one thing in common: the composition and behavior of certain cells change, causing them to become harmful to your body.

What is cancer

Characteristics of cancer

  • Due to changes in processes of cell growth, survival, or death, certain cells begin to behave differently or change in composition.
  • Cancer cells tend to multiply uncontrollably. Controlling, repairing, or destroying these 'derailed' cells is not always easy.
  • Cancer cells spread through the bloodstream, the lymphatic system, or by invading surrounding tissue.
  • In many cases, cancer cells form a mass, or tumor, in the body.

Is cancer an age-related disease?

In Belgium, cancer cases increase with age. There are several explanations for this, on which experts do not fully agree. Possible reasons include:

  • The nature of the cancer process itself: it is comparable to the process that causes aging in the body.
  • Older individuals have been exposed longer to risk factors for developing cancer.
  • Older cells may be more susceptible to the development of cancer.
  • Changes in the bodies of older people, such as insulin resistance and chronic inflammation, may make cells more prone to cancer.

Can cancer be prevented?

Completely preventing all types of cancer is unfortunately not possible, but preventive measures are certainly worthwhile.

With a healthier lifestyle, 30 to 40% of cancers diagnosed in Belgium could be prevented. In certain cases, vaccination can also contribute.

Once you have cancer, your lifestyle still matters. In 60 to 70% of cases, a healthy lifestyle, and therefore good physical and mental condition, increases the treatment options and chances of recovery.

Can cancer be detected early?

If detected at an early stage, certain types of cancer are treatable. Early detection, under certain conditions, also reduces the risk of dying from cancer.
