Is my cleaning help entitled to a break?
When you receive help at home from a cleaning help via service vouchers, you naturally want everything to proceed correctly and fairly. This applies to both you as a customer and to the household helper. One of the questions we often hear is: can a cleaning help take a break during work? And what does the law actually say about it? We are happy to explain it in a clear and simple way.
What does Belgian legislation say about breaks?
According to Belgian law, you are entitled to a break if you work for 6 hours or more non-stop. This break is unpaid unless otherwise agreed in the employment contract.
Breaks for cleaning help in practice
In practice, we see that household help is offered a short break by the customer after two hours of work. This typically involves a cup of coffee or a small snack. The break is not legally required, but it contributes to a pleasant working atmosphere and cooperation.
